Fluoride
Research indicates that fluoride is beneficial to your oral health. We are happy to answer your questions regarding this controversial subject. We can even develop a fluoride plan for you.
Dental decay is an infectious, multi-factorial disease that affects many people. Fluoride reduces the incidence of cavities, and can slow or even reverse the progression of cavities.
Dental decay is a transmissible disease, caused by the by-products (acids) of bacteria. (Yes, you can give it to your kids if you have active cavities). These acids dissolve the enamel (the hard outer surface) of teeth. If not addressed, bacteria (that are always present in our mouths) will penetrate the demineralized surface and attack the dentine (the soft inner portion) of teeth. If the decay continues, it will reach the soft pulp tissue. This can cause pain, loss of tooth, and can even progress to an acute systemic infection.
Fluoride works to control cavities in many ways. When fluoride levels in our mouth are optimal, the demineralization is inhibited, and actual remineralization occurs. It has been shown repeatedly how fluoride is more readily taken up by demineralized enamel than by sound enamel. This remineralized surface is actually more acid resistant (stronger) than before it was demineralized!
There are some that have concerns about fluoride use. We ask that you educate yourself on fluoride before you make a decision about using fluoride. The benefits truly outweigh the risks. A great place to start is the Center For Disease Controls (CDC) website. It thoroughly reviews fluoride in easy to read terminology. They list the many resources that are also available for you to read, should you need more information.
